Aspie Meet

Dear All

I am here to announce that we will meet in City Hall MRT Station, in front of the control station, on 12 December 2009 at 12pm (Saturday).

In the City Hall area, with a few secluded outdoor restaurants in CityLink Mall away from the main traffic as well as a few quiet eating places in Marina Square and CityLink Mall (the outdoor dining areas as what I saw), it would be more condusive to our meetup on 12 December 2009. Tentatively, assuming no special arrangements for dietary needs and spaces available, we will head to Xin Wang Taiwan Cafe in CityLink Mall (linked to City Hall MRT Station) for lunch and discussions. And it is ok if we do not order anything.

Discussions would pertain on several issues, namely; our specific conditions (if we choose to reveal), how has our conditions affected us, how we overcome our challenges, how we can advise others who are Aspies or HFAs (high functioning autistics, autistics that work with a higher intellectual capacity than most autistics, which are similar to Aspies) and hopefully, a discussion about forming a support group in Singapore to help and hopefully advocate for fellow Aspies/HFAs.

In addition, I would like to remind every participant that confirmation of the meet could only be done through SMSes, to Ruennsheng (me) at 97786774. This is to ensure that I can confirm attendance by SMS. It will be clearer who will come and I can trace everyone better.

It would be good if everyone can bring a fully charged mobile phone, with some cash for lunch (about $10 or so), as well as an EZ-Link card. If necessary, it would be good to bring some things to destress, like a few pieces of paper, coloured pens, MP3 players and so on. (This would be good to reduce sensory overload)

It would be good if you could help me to promote this activity through your respective websites as well as other means wherever possible.

I will update you when it is needed. On the meanwhile, please do continue to reply me if there are any queries.

Please forward this message to all Aspies in Singapore you know whenever possible, or tag any Aspies that you know to increase awareness of this meet. Thank you.

Best regards

Ruennsheng

What am I thinking today?

I am thinking about a few things that will help me calm my nerves down.

One includes thinking about the areas of which I have passion in. I am really happy that I can pursue my interests in cities, people and money-making in Geography. I consider Geography as my favorite subject while Economics a close 2nd.

I feel that Geography is a fun subject, because it helps me understand my living environment better. It is particularly so in human geography, as I am living in a major city and the interactions amongst human beings can really be interesting.

I love cities, I am currently dreaming about a city located in Western Sahara, where there will be a fair distribution of resources to be distributed to transport, and housing as well as social equity. I also love the people living in cities. And I want to see how can my dream city-state value-add its economy despite its geographical disadvantages.

Hence, it is my dream that I can continue to take Geography in university level and I hope I can do well enough in A Levels to go to university, and specialize in urban/human geography.

THE WORST ARTICLE I WILL EVER WRITE

I like all countries, but one of my favorites would be the United States. I also like New Zealand, Great Britain, Canada, Singapore, Australia and China. But since the most powerful websites in the world are American (though Chinese ones are catching up) I think I really love to explore its goodness and weaknesses.

One of my favorite aspects of American culture is that it seems everyone is the same. The people on the top do seem like enjoying their wealth, but as far as I know, their wealth is mostly vulnerable to the external shocks of stock crashes and public criticism. What is the net worth of these families; can they sustain high levels of wealth for a long time? I suppose not, they will need to save, scrimp and sacrifice to grow their net worth. I bet only a few people will enjoy doing this to achieve self-realization as outlined in the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

In America, people are actually the same by the very definition they are proud of: rich. Americans are almost equally rich, in my opinion. Lawyers, doctors and business executives are all leading a stressful life; even money is not going to make them truly rich because they need to ‘keep up with the Jones’, by buying large houses, cars and fur coats, and so on. They will have little net worth.

Education is the only way for the children to ‘maintain’ such high statuses, and hence demand for education has been pent-up. There are also several groups that prop up with education, besides doctors, executives and attorneys. They include engineers and teachers. Similarly, engineers and teachers are also getting ‘hot’, because they seem to lead people to a stable career with constant demands in innovation and progress. However, two-thirds (I’d say 80-95%) would be just technically working to apply some wonders to our world, so they cannot just simply spend like the top professions and be seen as ‘middle-class’, but nevertheless they can still command a net worth similar, sometimes even higher than those of the ‘white-shoe’ jobs, through investments and so on. So what if their job is less glamorous? They can be as rich as the ‘top’ anyway.

I didn’t forget some high-paid working class people who get money as well, who did not have much education as compared to the groups with high levels of education Unfortunately, these groups spend them on large luxury cars like Cadillac Escalade, as well as on booze and weed. Placing normal investment return rates on the accumulated money they spend, and you’ll get a large house that the groups above may live in. Isn’t everyone equally rich then?

In America, what sets it truly unique is that almost everyone can be rich, if their wealth is normalized by the habits of lifestyle. Hence, I think everybody from America is actually equally rich. And this being the richest country on Earth (after Luxembourg and Qatar), this also happens to be the 3rd most equal country in terms of equality of income. The idea of America inspires me because it means equality and opportunity, in terms of wealth alone.

However America is not just about the money, it’s also about the choice.

Those who are educated will definitely feel more exposed to the wonders of the world. Those who are less educated, in contrast, will just be less exposed. My dream is to see for myself what are the less educated like.

It is always said that the poor are trapped in a never-ending poverty trap. It’s my wish for me to verify this. I want to visit the Great Wall of China so that I can witness, on my own, how can a large country of a billion people become richer and more powerful within 30 years? I also want to visit inner-city Detroit or Los Angeles or Oakland to understand better why even the people living in the richest countries can still be poor? (For Luxembourg, this will never be the case unless you can’t master three languages, and in Qatar this will never be the case too unless you fail to conform to the government-regulated standards)

Fill me in.

Idiosyncratic

It's weird to see this: many bright students only apply to lower-ranked schools and then drop out, while a few Nat Hortonos go to the best schools and then maybe stay in school and get a good cert from there.

As I first thought, life is thoroughly unfair. It seems only the rich get into good schools and the poor the worse ones. The rich people can buy their way out of their own troubles, whereas the poor people, no matter how good they are, they will just think these schools suck their money out and hence find education a waste of time, hence drop out.

However, the students from better schools will be good if they top there, while the worse students will just say 'oh my life is so ordinary'... Whereas the top students from worse schools can get more financial support and be the best they can be.

Hence I think the solution is simple: 'just do what we want.
